The waters here are often coloured sparkling flamingo pink, from thousands of the attractive birds lining its shores. The park is home to warthogs, waterbuck, buffaloes, reedbucks, and the occasional leopard. White and black rhinos were introduced to the park some years ago and you will find white rhino at the southern end.  The park has also retained its reputation as an ornithologists’ delight with more than 400 species of bird found here. Day 4: Nakuru – Masai Mara

Depart from Nakuru after breakfast and drive south via Narok to the Mara reserve, you will have a game drive en route to the luxurious tented camp upon arrival in the Reserve. Arrive in time for lunch. The rest of the afternoons at leisure and in the early evening embark on a game drive to get a closer look at the Mara. Masai Mara has incredible wide-open landscapes and fertile riverine woodland following the looping meanders of the Mara and Talek rivers. Wherever you go in the Mara you will see a frequent amount of wildlife such as Masai giraffe, baboons, warthogs, bat eared foxes, grey jackals, spotted hyena, topis, impala, hartebeests, wildebeest. Elephants, buffaloes, zebras and hippos also exist in great numbers.  It is also common to see lions either basking after a heavy meal, or surveying the plains for their next meal. Cheetahs and leopards are harder to spot but are still reasonably common. The ultimate action here is without doubt the annual wildebeest exodus in July and August when millions of these grass eaters move north from the Serengeti in search of lusher grass before turning south again in October.

FAIRMONT MARA SAFARI CLUB

Fairmont Mara Safari Club lies in the north west of the Maasai Mara, at the foot of the Aitong Hills in the Ol-Choro Oiroua Conservation Area that boarders the Maasai Mara National Reserve. The camp is positioned on an ox-bow of the Mara River, so that all en-suite tents have a view of the hippo-filled river. The lodge is surrounded by well-cultivated gardens dotted among indigenous trees. The main lodge at the center of camp hosts an indoor restaurant, bar and library with Internet access to keep the relatives up to date with safari adventures. A spacious outside deck overhangs the river and leads to a heated pool, complete with bar and private massage tents. With four-poster, pillow-top beds and a veranda overlooking the hippo and crocodile-filled river, each of the 50 tents at Fairmont Mara Safari Club is superbly furnished with its own private, three-piece bathroom, including a number of “outdoor showers” in select tents. The larger-sized accommodations also feature expanded decks which allow for private dining, a new service. Guests can choose from a wide range of activities at Fairmont Mara Safari Club, including game drives and balloon safaris over the Mara plains capped with a champagne breakfast on the savannah or a stroll in the footprints of the hippo-trodden path escorted by a Masai Moran. The main lodge at the center of camp hosts an indoor restaurant, bar and library. Outdoor dining will be enhanced with the creation of a boma, a structure influenced by traditional homesteads, where guests can enjoy a cultural dinner reflecting not only African cuisine but also rich musical accompaniment.

Early morning tea or coffee and thereafter enjoy full day in the Masai Mara with game drives included. It is a reserve of breathtaking vistas, panoramas of vast rolling plains, hills and woodland groves, well watered by the lovely Mara River, which bisects the Reserve from north to south. The Mara is home to the largest population of lions in Kenya, these magnificent beasts spending most of the day sleeping in the shade of acacia trees. Vast herds of buffalo, zebra and wild beast roam the plains. Impala, gazelle, giraffe and hartebeest grace the landscape, and the cautious topi may also see standing sentinel on earth mounds on constant lookout of predators. The waters of the Mara River are home to crocodiles and pools of hippo, the acacia woodlands and riverine forests favored by leopard and elephant, and the open savannah and dry bush areas play host to the plains game and their attendant predators such as lion, cheetah, hyena and jackal.
